What is osteopathy?

Osteopaths work to restore both structure and function of the body. They focus mainly on the musculoskeletal system, which consists of the body’s bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Osteopaths work to restore a state of balance between structure and function.

Osteopaths have a high developed sense of touch to feel through different tissues and try to identify the underlying problem. They then use manual techniques such as; soft tissue, mobilisation and manipulation to relieve muscle tension and enhance blood and nerve supply to the tissue. This helps the body’s own healing process to reduce pain.

Osteopaths try and help reduce and minimise pain during day-to-day to living. They give advice on how best to manage work, rest and play, and aim to get you back to doing the things you enjoy. Exercises will also be given to try and help patients manage their own pain.

There are many reasons the body doesn’t function correctly, this could be from an injury or it could be something less obvious, and take years to develop. Your Osteopath will try and work out exactly what is causing or aggravating the pain and the best way to manage it.
